Day 1

From ZumZum Beachhouse to Tsavo East

You will be picked up early in the morning (6:30 AM) from the Zum Zum Beachhouse to depart for Tsavo East, located around 220 km away.

What can you expect during the drive?

This trip will be everything but dull, because the four-hour drive will take you through fascinating villages inhabited by the local Mijikenda tribe, as well as Masai and Taita tribes.

You will be astonished by the local flora that changes the closer you get to Tsavo East.

The Taita Hills will appear as you approach Tsavo West, located on the Yatta Plateau, the world’s longest lava flow.

Before you enter the nature reserve to start on a wildlife safari, there is time for a short break.

While you take in the incredible majesty of the park you will be able to spot quite a few animals right away! Lunch will be served upon arrival at the lodge of your choice. Next on the programme is a late afternoon safari to become better acquainted with Tsavo East.

Dreaming of the big 5...

Get out your binoculars and cameras for a unique opportunity to spot elephants, hippos, lions, leopards, buffaloes and various species of plants and birds, such as the black kite, the grey crown crane, the dwarf parrot and the sacred ibis.

Not only that, Tsavo East is also home to the largest elephant herds in Kenya. The hide of the elephants (and that of many other animals in the park) is red because of the red dust with which they cover themselves to protect themselves from insects.

"Maneaters" of Tsavo

The lions of Tsavo owe their name to the book and film The Maneaters of Tsavo, in which several railway workers in the last century were devoured by lions. The lions, who only attacked humans because the poor condition of their teeth made it impossible for them to eat buffalo or gazelles, ended up being shot. Otherwise, man would never have become their prey.

After this safari we return to the lodge for dinner and to spend the night.
